SPIRIT MOVES

Tabla Rasa Gallery kicks off the New Year hosting SPIRIT  MOVES, a day of posing with Robin Ross, on Sunday, January 11, 2009, as part of the current exhibition, NOBIS SOLO.  This special event is designed to offer the public a unique opportunity for insight into the working process of a wonderfully creative and articulate artist.

Robin Ross has been painting "spirits" as portrait for over 10 years. At SPIRIT MOVES, she  invites the public to explore and show her their "totem animal", hidden or imagined self, or to expose their joie de vivre in a safe and supportive space.  Her photographs of the poses will become part of her library of photos  for future paintings. Barbara Lubliner will help coordinate as muse and demonstrator.

The public is invited to attend, either as observers or participants. If you plan to participate  in SPIRIT MOVES, please wear comfortable clothing. Ms. Ross prefers no socks, for close-ups of feet, and tight clothes, but most importantly she suggests you dress comfortably. You will be free to dance, spin or lounge on the floor in the clean open spaces of the gallery.

The current Tabla Rasa exhibition NOBIS SOLO, continues, with 3 large and 5 small spirit portraits by Robin Ross.  Her hauntingly beautiful paintings encapsulate the mystery of life. At once abstract and representational, her seductive paint surfaces alternatively reveal and obscure figures and parts of figures, hovering between the spiritual and physical realms. They seem to take in the entire spectrum of consciousness; a transmigration from soul to soul.

The gallery is located a few short "R" subway stops beyond Park Slope, at 224 48th Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.

From Manhattan, "D" or "N" train to 36 Street in Brooklyn, cross platform, and take "R" train one stop to 45th Street. Street parking is usually ample.

Tabla Rasa Gallery is free and open to the public. Call 718.833.9100 for hours and schedule updates.
General gallery hours: 1:00 - 5:00 pm, THURSDAY, FRIDAY & SATURDAY.
(Please note: Tabla Rasa Gallery will be closed Saturday January 10, 2009.)

About the Robin Ross

Robin Ross was educated at the University of Colorado and New York University and has been living and working in Brooklyn NY for the past 22 years. Influenced at a young age by Degas, Braque and Brueghel reproductions, she formed her personal sense of color and immediacy. At eighteen she went into a brief coma, an experience adding an aspect of deep spirituality to her life and work.

Her artwork has appeared in publications including Art in General Manual 1992-1993 (1994), The New York Daily News (2002), And Then (2003), Flying Into the Sun (2004) and Zeek Magazine (2007). Ross has appeared on Live at Five as a featured artist on NBC's “Local Focus” (1996), in the independent film about her project “Animal Postures” by David Varga (1997), and in “Robin Ross: A Look at Hands” directed by filmmaker Leybe Diaz (2004). Her recent two person show at Tribes Gallery can be viewed at The James Kalm Report: Being In a Lone Space, Surbone and Ross at Tribes.

Her work is present in many private and public collections, including Pfizer Inc., the Brooklyn Marriott Hotel and the International Monetary Fund.
